REF35: Sink Current

Part Number: REF35

In the d/s ec table, it defines the sinking and sourcing current. In general application, the sourcing current is used. i'm wondering to know what condition that the sinking current is used? and what application?

Regards

Brian

  • Hi Brian,

A common case where sinking current is used is when an external reference is used with a data converter.

Sinking current can happen for different startup conditions in various applications, such as other IC's whose pins output a voltage temporarily or an op amp that could drive current back into the VREF pin. When the output pin of the VREF is driven higher by an external IC it causes the current to flow back into the reference.

The reverse current capability of a reference is usually to make sure that the voltage reference can output an accurate and precise voltage level even if there happens to be a case where current might be driven back into the VREF pin.

    Best,
