BQ79656EVM-021: Regarding the bridge device BQ79600EVM

Part Number: BQ79656EVM-021
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ79600-Q1

Hi, in our application we are using 4 BQ79656EVM for BMS (UART). I want to know about the bridge device BQ79600 EVM, that it-

  • Is this device (BQ79600) being necessary with this system or not?
  • and why it is used, what is the purpose of this device?
  • What are the additional benefits provided by BQ79600?
  • When and for what application should BQ79600 is to be used?

please let me know these queries.

Thanks and Regards

  • Hi Abhaya,

This depends on the requirements that are desired in the end application.

Is this device (BQ79600) being necessary with this system or not?

No, it is not necessary. Operation without the BQ79600-Q1 is possible when it becomes addressed as the bottom of the stack. As for the purpose, you can see below in the additional benefits.

When and for what application should BQ79600 is to be used?

We list the following on our datasheet:

Do you have a specific application you're working in that you can share?

What are the additional benefits provided by BQ79600?

The main thing benefit of the BQ79600-Q1 bridge device is the automatic wake up of the BMS/BMU system in the ring architecture and the reverse wake up that is featured.

You can find some information in this thread that I answered previously about reverse wakeup: BQ79600-Q1 Reverse Wake Up Thread.

Reverse wakeup can be incredibly useful when a modular battery system does not need to have its main CPU/MCU on all the time and only in fault scenarios. This allows for reduced energy consumption overall.

Additionally, there is the sniff detector feature that you can read about in the datasheet.

Let me know if any additional information is needed!

  • Hi, thank you for your response, I have some addition quires:

    • Ring architecture is not possible without BQ79600? Ring architecture can be possible with BQ79656 only?
    • In our application we are using 4 BQ79656 for BMS. So, I want to ask what addition feature BQ79600 can bring, without BQ79600, what we will miss?

    Thanks and Regards

  • Hi Abhyaya,

Ring architecture is not possible without BQ79600? Ring architecture can be possible with BQ79656 only?

Ring architecture is still be possible as the BQ79656 supports daisy chain communication.

So, I want to ask what addition feature BQ79600 can bring, without BQ79600, what we will miss?

As I mentioned previously, you will lose the option of reverse wake up and sniff detection if you do not include the BQ79600.
