TPS1653: what is the recommended output capacitance?

Part Number: TPS1653

Hello,

I’m working with the TPS16530 and have a question about its output capacitance. I’ve ordered the evaluation module (EVM) and conducted some tests. The EVM uses a 470uF capacitor, but I couldn’t find any specific recommendations for the output capacitance value in the datasheet.

In my setup, I used a 22uF ceramic capacitor and conducted the following tests:

  • The ambient temperature was set at 85°C.
  • The input voltage was 36V.
  • The current limit was configured to be 1A.

I performed a hot plug test on two loads: 30 ohms and 45 ohms, and measured both the input and output currents. The first test was a hot plug to 0.8A, and the second was a hot plug to overcurrent at 1.2A.

With the 22uF capacitor, I noticed some odd oscillations. When I increased the capacitance to 42uF, the oscillations decreased.

My question is: What is the recommended output capacitance, or how should I choose the output capacitance?

I’ve attached two figures for reference. The first figure shows the results with an output capacitance of 22uF, and the second shows the results with a 42uF capacitance.

Thank you for your assistance.
