BQ25180: Each operating modes

Part Number: BQ25180

Hi experts,

I have some questions about the operation mode of "BQ25180".

There are four operating modes: CHARGE/ADAPTER MODE, BATTERY MODE, SHIP MODE, and SHUTDOWN MODE.

・Could you please tell me the status of IN, Battery, and Vsys in each mode?
・Could you please tell me the current consumption of IN and Battery in each mode?
・Could you please tell me the transition conditions for each mode (state transition diagram if possible)?

We are concerned about current consumption. Ideally, the current consumption on the Battery side when IN is supplied and the current consumption on the Battery side when IN is not supplied is small.

Thank you for your help.

Taito Takemura

  • Hi Taito,

    The modes are as follows:

Adapter Mode Battery Mode Ship Mode Shutdown Mode
    VIN Present Not-Present Not-Present Not-Present
BAT Present or Not-Present Present Present Present
    SYS Available* Available* Disabled Disabled

    *Availability based on SYS_MODE setting.

The current consumption of these modes is described in the Input Currents section of the Electrical Characteristics table:

I don't currently have a state diagram but I can describe the following:

    • If VIN is asserted, from the other modes will transition to Adapter Mode. When VIN is removed (unless ship mode or shutdown mode are in queue) battery mode is entered.
    • If shutdown or ship mode are queued then VIN removal will directly transition to shutdown or ship mode.
    • You can enter ship mode from Battery mode by I2C or MR queueing a ship mode entrance request. To exit ship mode you can press MR (to BATTMODE) or assert VIN (to Adapter mode).
    • You can enter shutdown mode from Battery mode by I2C or MR queueing a shutdown entrance request. To exit shutdown mode you must Assert VIN (to Adapter mode)

Please let me know if I can clarify anything.

    Best Regards,
