Question about TPS51640

In intel huron river platform, sandy bridgeCPU, the vcc_core current request is as follows:Iccmax=94A,Itdc=52A,Idynmax=66A, that is the same as the TPS51640 reference demo shecmatic's request. the  TPS51640's external design schematic is mostly followed the datasheet. The difference between the reference shcmatic and mine is the inductor. I used 0.47uH 2.5mΩ. I used sandy bridge i7 CPU, the frequecy is 2.1GHz, but I only use less than 1.2GHz. if in the higher frequency the M/B will shut down. even though it can work in low frequency, the parameters which contais EIST,C3,C6 and C7 are needed set disable.

I found in page27of the TPS51640 datasheet, there is a parameter VHFM whose value is 0.9V. what is the meaning of the 0.9v? Is it the max value or min value? In the expriment when the MB work normally, the cpu_core is low than 0.9v. I think  there is maybe relation.

I hope received your reply as soon as possible. Thank you very much!

  • Hi Eleven,

Could you please forward your questions to my email address directly? nancy_zhang@ti.com. TPS51640 is Intel IMVP7 product and we don't want  to discuss it through the forum.

    Thanks,

    Nancy

  • Hi Eleven,

0.9V is the HFM test voltage for QC processor  in the Intel spec. HFM refers to the high frequency mode of CPU which is the clock frequency. Higher the clock frequency more current. In your case, you could not simply change the inductor from 0.36uH, 0.825mohm to 0.47uH, 2.5mohm without change the DCR sense network. If you don't change the DCR sense network, then it is quite possible that you will hit the current limit and shutdown at HFM mode. We have excel spreadsheet to help you to calculate the DCR sense network. Please let me know if you need it.

    Thanks,

    Nancy

  • Hi Nancy,

Thanks for your reply.  I have send email to you.  I'm looking forward to your reply. Thanks!
