LM74701-Q1: Load dump protection

Part Number: LM74701-Q1

Hello Expert,

We'd like to make sure about what protection TVS diode can be omitted by LM74701-Q1.

Regarding negative surge as like as ISO7637-2 pulse 1, this device can clamp anode side down to VCLAMP.
So I think we can omit bi-directional TVS diode for clamping negative surge at anode side.

On the other hands, regarding positive surge or load dump, this device can withstand upto 65V at Anode as like as 35V suppressed load dump.
Therefore, I think we need to place TVS diode against high voltage over voltage event.
For protecting this event, I guess there is 2type of protection TVS diode location one is the anode side and the other is cathode side.

Then, would you tell me which is correct placement of TVS diode?

Best regards,
Kazuki Kuramochi

  • Hi Kazuki,

LM74701-Q1 is a specifically designed for operation without any input TVS diode hence Input bi-directional TVS diode can be omitted as device has a clamping feature.

Cathode side TVS is considerable according to your system to protect downstream loads although the device can survive 35V suppressed load dump with ease without any TVS.
