TPS2065C: Inquire for input surge

Part Number: TPS2065C

Hi, TI support team

I would like to continue with my previous inquiry.

I am sharing the link to the previous inquiry as below.

https://e2e.ti.com/support/power-management-group/power-management/f/power-management-forum/1310677/tps2065c-inquire-for-input-surge

I understand what you answered.

However, since the timing of the surge that occurs at the input occurs at a very short moment, please check that there is no problem according to the ESD spec.

Since the timing of the input surge component is short as mentioned above, please share if there is a specification for the surge on the input side (timing, surge level, etc.).

Thanks.

Regards,

MJ

  • Hello MJ,

The ESD ratings shown in the TPS2065C datasheet cannot be applied to surges as they are different; surges can be up to 200 times the length of an ESD event (based on the waveform models of the IEC 61000-4-2). Due to the longer pulse length, the energy in a surge is many times higher than the energy in an ESD pulse, regardless of the relative magnitude.

My recommendation is to read Section 9.2.2.1 in the datasheet and consider using larger caps at the input especially if there is a large input inductance. The datasheet states, "momentary input transients to 6.5 V are permitted", so this or simply the 6V max input voltage is the spec to meet.
