I agree with that understanding.
For pack products, resetting is required after replacing the battery.
I don't think there will be any problems when using it as a system product as long as resetting is acceptable.

Technically, the battery will never be replaced when there is a pack side gauge. The gauge and the battery are all part of the same unit. However, your second point is correct. It is possible to use a pack side gauge as a system side gauge if you reset the gauge when the new battery is inserted. The only consideration is that when the new battery is inserted you will need to allow the gauge some time to learn the characteristics of the new battery.
