BQ25756: How compatible is the TPS25750 PD Controller with the BQ25756 battery charger?

Part Number: BQ25756
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS25750, TPS25751

Hello,

I have a question related to the compatibility between the BQ25756 battery charger and the TPS25750 PD controller. With the information obtained from another thread (https://e2e.ti.com/support/power-management-group/power-management/f/power-management-forum/1294407/bq25756-bq25756/4931274?tisearch=e2e-sitesearch&keymatch=%25252520user%2525253A582581#4931274), I know that the TPS25750 is compatible with the BQ25756 and the TPS25751 is compatible pin to pin with the TPS25750, so the TPS25751 can be a direct replacement of the TPS25750.

But now I am wondering if the firmware generated (in the application customization tool) for the TPS25751, with the BQ25756 integrated, can also been applied to the TPS25750 or it need a reconfiguration or adaptation because any difference between the TPS25750 and the TPS25751.

I say that because in the application customization tool applied to the TPS25750, the battery charger BQ25756 doesn't appear and I don't know how to generate the firmware to the TPS25750 to be associated with BQ25756.

In summary:

1.- Is there any way to generate the firmware for the TPS25750  with the BQ25756 integrated?

2.- Can I generate the firmware for the TPS25751 with the BQ25756 integrated and then flash it on the TPS25750 with the BQ25756 integrated?

3.- What are the main differences between the TPS25750 and the TPS25751?

Best regards,

Jose Jiménez

  • Hello Jose,

Thanks for working with us on this. Let me loop in the TPS25751 experts and we will get back to you shortly.

  • Hi Jose,

1.- Is there any way to generate the firmware for the TPS25750  with the BQ25756 integrated?

TPS25750 does not have firmware support to integrate with BQ25756, you'll need to use TPS25751.

2.- Can I generate the firmware for the TPS25751 with the BQ25756 integrated and then flash it on the TPS25750 with the BQ25756 integrated?

The firmware generated for TPS25751 cannot be used for TPS25750, they have different ROM base and firmware images.

3.- What are the main differences between the TPS25750 and the TPS25751?

TPS25751 includes integrated firmware support for BQ25756 along with previous BQ devices that TPS25750 supports. TPS25751 also includes new features such as PPS sourcing and sinking, liquid detection, corrosion mitigation, and updated firmware to meet PD3.1 specifications.

Let us know if you have any additional questions regarding TPS25751 or BQ25756!

    Thanks and Regards,

  • Hello Raymond,

    I have one more question:

Is there any other PD controller that includes integrated firmware support for BQ25756?

    Best regards,

    Jose Jiménez

  • Hi Jose,

The only PD controller with integrated BQ25756 firmware configuration is TPS25751. We do have an EPR PD device on our roadmap that will also include integrated FW for BQ25756 but this device is only needed for EPR (Extended Power Range maximum at 240W) applications. For SPR (Standard Power range maximum at 100W) application TPS25751 is the most suitable device.

    Thanks and Regards,
