TPS25983: Inquiries about the device

Part Number: TPS25983
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: , TPS25982

Hello,

My customer has some questions about the TPS25983.

Q1. TPS25983EVM is confirmed to have TPS259830LNRGE (current limiter) applied. Are there any EVMs with TPS259830ONRGE (Circuit breaker) applied?

Q2. Please tell us the difference and pros / cons of the two types of Active current limiter and Circuit breaker.

Q3. Please tell us the difference between the two types: FET - Internal / External. What FET type is used in EVB? Is the FET type fixed by Device P/N?

Thank you.

  • Hi JH,

Q1. TPS25983EVM is confirmed to have TPS259830LNRGE (current limiter) applied. Are there any EVMs with TPS259830ONRGE (Circuit breaker) applied?

A: No all EVMs have same device on them. Also, currently we are out of TPS25983 EVMs and they are going through build process. If urgent evaluation is required, then TPS25982 is pin2pin compatible device and its EVM can be used for evaluation after changing the device.

Q2. Please tell us the difference and pros / cons of the two types of Active current limiter and Circuit breaker.

A: When the current goes above the set threshold, circuit breaker will latch off the device and you will get no vout whereas current limiter will provide you with constant current until a safe temperature and after that it can perform thermal shutdown. This is the key difference.

Q3. Please tell us the difference between the two types: FET - Internal / External. What FET type is used in EVB? Is the FET type fixed by Device P/N?

A: So efuse have internal FETs which provide the switching. For feature like reverse current blocking, you require back to back fet configuration with 2 FETs. For this, TPS25983 have an option to connect external fet at output with gate controlled from the dvdt pin. This external fet will be N channel.

This FET is used in our EVM
