BQ25898: BQ2598 Charging

Part Number: BQ25898

Hi,

Can I use BQ25898 for charging a parallel 2 cell as below shown.

  • Hi Sreejitha,

Yes the BQ25898 device can be used to charge 2 cells in parallel.

  • Hi Garnett,

We are planning to use such a battery charger for secondary charging option for our device. Primary charging is with a dedicated PMIC with USB charging.

So we are in search for a charger IC without the following pins. Kindly let us know whether TI has any solution for our requirement.

    Following pins not required.

    • OTG
    • ILIM
    • TS
    • QON
    • VOK

  • Hi Sreejitha,

What is your requirement for charge current on the secondary charger? Do you have a package preference (WCSP verse QFN)? If you are specifically looking for a buck converter charger some of the pins you mention as unneeded are on every option TI has to offer.

For example, TS pin for battery temperature monitoring is on every battery charger we have. If you do not wish to use this function TS pin can be connected between two 10kohm resistors from REGN pin to GND.

Similarly, the ILIM pin for setting input current limit is on the vast majority of our charger options. Please be aware there is a register bit (REG00 bit 6 'EN_ILIM') on BQ25898 which can be set to disable ILIM pin. With EN_ILIM = 0 ILIM pin can be left floating.

The other pins you mention can simply be connected to GND or left floating. Please see my comments on each specific pin below.

    • OTG pin can be shorted to GND if OTG mode will not be used.
    • QON pin can be left floating if it will not be used.
    • VOK pin can be left floating if it will not be used.

    Best Regards,

    Garrett

  • Hi Garnett,

    Thank you for the suggestions.

Kindly have a look into the schematics and share your valuable feedback.

  • Hi Sreejitha,

    Please see my comments below.

    • The BQ25898 is designed to work with an inductor in the range of 1 uH to 2.2 uH. You will need to select an alternate inductor to the one shown in your schematic.
    • If you plan to disable ILIM pin it is okay to be left floating. Otherwise I recommend you connect it directly to GND.

All other connections shown look good to me.

    Best Regards,

    Garrett
