BQ79616EVM-021: How to run EVM board without connecting the cells?

Part Number: BQ79616EVM-021
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ79616

Hello,

I have an BQ79616EVM board. How can I monitoring cell via the BQAutoEval GUI without connecting them? Or is there a simulation so I can test this with EVM board? Otherwise how should simulate it?

Thanks.

  • Hi Nazli,
You can simulate cells on the BQ79616 EVM by using the resistor ladder on the EVM. The resistor ladder takes the power supply voltage and divides down the voltage through a voltage divider to simulate cell voltages.

To connect the resistor ladder on the EVM, ensure that headers J14 and J16 are populated and that the actuators on S1 and S2 are pointed towards the IC. Finally, ensure that the positive terminal of the power supply is connected to VSTACK or PWR and that the negative terminal is connected to GND or Cell0. In this state, the resistor ladder will simulate cell voltages for the IC. The cell voltage should read back as 1/16 of the module voltage of the power supply.

For more detailed hardware information, look under section 5.2: "Power Connections" in the BQ79616 EVM User's Guide.

    Sincerely,
    Michelle W

  • Could you advise on the recommended voltage range for the power supply when simulating cell voltages using the resistor ladder on the BQ79616 EVM? Additionally, I'm designed a BMS with the BQ79616 but lack a cell simulator circuit. Can you recommend a cell simulator circuit compatible with it? I plan to build an additional board for simulation purposes.

  • Hi Batuhan,

For full functionality on the BQ79616 EVM, the recommended voltage range for the power supply when using the resistor ladder is between 16V - 80V because of the BAT and VC/CB pin voltage requirements listed in the BQ79616 Datasheet. The resulting cell voltage is 1/16th of the power supply voltage.

For the cell simulator circuit, the BQ79616 EVM User's guide has the full schematic of the EVM. The schematic includes the resistor ladder and RC filter circuit that can be used to simulate and filter cell voltages. For the BQ79616 EVM design files, you will need to file a request under this link: https://www.ti.com/licreg/docs/swlicexportcontrol.tsp?form_id=305269&prod_no=BQ7x61x-Q1_DEVELOPMENT&ref_url=app_bms_bms-bap or under "Request More Information: Design recommendations and application notes are available" on the BQ79616 information page.

    Sincerely,

    Michelle W.
