TPS7A11: Design a power supply for Nordic nrf9160 and nrf52840

Hi support,

I would like to use TPS7A1118PDRVR to power the nrf52840. The input voltage is a battery voltage from 1,5 to 5,5 V. I use LTC3536 DC-DC regulator to step-down the voltage to 3.3V which is the input voltage for TPS7A1118PDRVR. When I connect the power supply to the PCB the LTC3536 and the TPS7A1118PDRVR are not working anymore. Could you check my design?

Hi Kiril,

If the LTC3536 is not turning on then it sounds like there's an issue with it and not the TPS7A11, or at least it won't be evident if there is an issue with the TPS7A11 since it doesn't have a supply. Have you tried powering the TPS7A11 separately to check if it's working?

Hi Nick,

I checked it again. I have two boards. I tried different loads. Both ICs are not working anymore on each board. May be something with the BIAS circuit is not OK. Could you give us a TI solution for the power supply? This is just a prototype, and we can modify it.

Hi Kiril,

TPS7A11 should work for the 1.8V rail, and I'll re-assign this post to the team responsible for buck-boost regulators for help selecting a device for the 3.3V rail.

I appreciate your recommendations. We would like to see what will be your decision with buck-boost converter and TPS7A11. I saw that you have TPS7A2118PQWDRBRQ1 too. Which one is better for us TPS7A11 or TPS7A21?

What is the current level of 3.3V rail? 1.6V minimum input voltage is acceptable?

Hi Tao,

For the nRF9160 we have 800mA peak current at 3.3V output for the DC/DC regulator. For the 1.8V rail for the nRF52840 we have not more than 300mA.

We would like to use a very low noise DC/DC buck boost battery converter to make a 3.3v output for the nRF9160. The 3.3V output should be used to power some low dropout LDO. The output of this LDO should be 1.8V/500mA and we would like it to be suitable for RF to power the GPIOs and the nRF52840. Do you have any solution suitable for this?

Hi Kiril,

Recommend TPS63101X family for your application. Remind there is gap that the minimum input voltage should be 1.6V.
