BQ78350: HCFET: transition from Precharge to Charge is not automatic

Hello,

we have a battery pack based on bq78350R2 where we use the HCFET feature to control the charge mode or discharge mode.

We have an issue in charge mode when the battery is in the precharge area.

When we set the battery in charge mode, we send a HCFET command with the value of 5 meaning to allow both the charge (bit-0)  and precharge (bit-2) whichever is applicable.

When  the battery is in precharge and reaches the threshold to quit, we notice the Precharge FET to go OFF but we don't see the CHARGE FET to go ON automatically, unless we issue another time the HCFET command. But the problem is that if we are not fast enough we may confuse some chargers that for a while they see the battery not accepting any charge.

Is there a workaround  to have a smooth and automatic transition between precharge and charge while in HCFET mode ?

    The host FET control feature doesn't stop protection. You still need to configure protection to enable the CHGFET when you need it to. Please check all references to XCHG in the TRM and look up your configuration and system state to make sure that XCHG is not set when you need the CHG fet to be on.

    thanks for the fast reply.

    I confirm the XCHG is off when the battery has reached the end of precharge and is ready to enter in nomral charge mode, so apparently there aren't protection conditions in our case to prevent a normal charge.

    Do you have any idea why the transition is not automatic and smooth ?

    The gauge will not turn off the CHG FET if host control is on with CHG FET enabled and XCHG = 0. I went through the firmware code to verify so my answer is based on code analysis, not just reading the TRM.

    It will turn the CHG FET on, if the host fet control command turned it on and if there isn't any other protection reason for the CHG FET to be off. Do you have a log file that shows the behavior?

    thanks fo lookng into it, I have to prepare for this.

    I will set a battery low in precharge, then will send the HCFET with value 5 (both PCH andf CHG allowed) and will give it a charge logging the relevant statuses, and I will show you.

    Hello Dominik, please the log file obtained fom bqstudio.

    Please note:

    - before start charging,  I sent HCFET with 5 to enable both charge and precharge.
    - due to the low cell vo-tage the PCH is enabled
    - the battery has IPSCALING with a factor of 10 so you read 16mA but in reality it is 160mA
    - the PCHG threshold is set at 2600mV, the Chargin Voltage low is set at 2700mV, Chargin V hysteresis is 0mV, so it should quit precharge when all cells are higher than 2700mV
    - the charger is a power supply regulated at ~29V (the pack is a 7S), so it should continue charging if FETs would allow, but it didn't as you can see.

    The log file shows that the gauge FW turns on the FETs. Please check the voltage on the CHG pin of the bq76920 to rule out a problem with the FET gate drive.
