BQ40Z80: Inquiries regarding BQ40Z80

Part Number: BQ40Z80
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQSTUDIO, BQ76942, EV2400

Hi, TI expert

A customer would like to review the BQ40Z80 and has a question.
I think it also has a built-in MCU core... but I can't find the example code.

Are you just using it by setting it to SMBus? Or do you code it and use it?

If you have any related information, can you please share it?

Please check. Thank you.

  • Hello Grady,

You can communicate to the BQ40z80 through SMBus. You can program the BQ40z80 using BQStudio or using an external MCU. Please read the TRM to learn more about this

  • Hi, Nick Richards

    Thanks for reply.

The customer plans to mass-produce a battery pack this time and plans to use the BQ40z80.

Although I have read the Technical Reference Manual, it is not easy to understand the necessary information at once, so I would like to ask you a few more questions.

Q1) It seems like it works without an MCU... is that correct?
-Is there any equipment needed to set it up?
-What equipment is needed for mass production?

Q2) When BQ76942 was used previously, there was basic example code for MCU.
Is there no related example code for BQ40Z80?

    Please check. Thank you.

  • Hey Grady,

Yes, if you are not going to use an MCU, then you can communicate to the gauge using BQStudio. All you would need is a computer and the EV2400.
For mass production and gauge communication, please read this app note. www.ti.com/.../slua801.pdf
