TPS54340: Duration allowed for more than 3.5A output current

Part Number: TPS54340

Hello team,

The this device is made for 3.5A continuous output, but can ouput up to 4.5A minimum peak indutor current.

How can I calculate the time duration this deivice can withstand for output current of more than 3.5A?

My customer is expecting the load current to be more than 3.5A because of inrush current.

Best Regards,
Kei Kuwahara

  • Hi Kuwahara-san,

Thank you for posting.  According to the datasheet, the IC should support 3.5A load current indefinitely as long as the inductor current does not trip the 4.5A peak current threshold.  Over-current (>3.5A) continuously may raise the IC temperature and in server case it may trigger thermal shutdown.  It is mainly a thermal issue.  However, if the concern of over-current is just a transient like inrush, the IC should handle it well without interruption of operation.

    Thanks,

    Youhao
