BQ40Z80: Replacement for BQ20Z65 Design - Obsolete

Part Number: BQ40Z80
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ20Z65, , BQ34Z100

I have an existing battery design that is very popular and is currently based on the BQ20Z65 which is completely obsolete.

I am considering updating the design to the BQ40Z80 but I have a few questions:

1) From a obsolecense point of view, I don't want to convert the pack to the BQ40Z80 unless i know that part will be around for at least 5 years. Is this a good choice for a brand new design, or is there a newer part that would be suggested instead?

2) From a compatibility point of view, is the BQ40Z80 the "closest" part you have to the BQ20Z65? Or is there another part that would be closer to a drop in design (in particular, the multiplexed LED driver on the Z80 is going to be a major pain for me compared to the non-multiplexed drive of the Z65).

  • Hey Steve,

1.) Yes, the BQ40z80 is still a good part for new designs.

2.) Yes, the BQ40z80 is very similar to the BQ20z65 since the BQ40z80 can support applications up to 6 cells in series. You can also check out the BQ34z100 as this can support up to 16 cells in series
