TPSI3050: DC Output capability of TPSI3050 when driving SCR's.

Part Number: TPSI3050

We are a Thyristor manufacturer and we are looking to use the TPSI3050 in one of our reference designs for customers to use in the home appliance sector.

I noticed the driver doesn't make any claims for continuous DC output current, only peak values, which are more applicable to Mosfet's than SCR's. In one of our applications we have a need to use continuous DC gate drive for these devices, with 50mA being commonly applied.

We are likelly to be using the 3 wire mode with a 5V supply. Do you have any data you can share on the output capabilities of the driver under this situation?

Thanks

  • Hello C.S,

Thanks for reaching out to our team on E2E. The TPSI305x-Q1 can certainly drive SCRs. My understanding is that SCRs require a gate trigger current for a period of time, after which the holding current is sufficient to keep the SCR on through its respective voltage cycle. The TPSI305x-Q1 devices can transfer 83 mW at maximum power transfer to the secondary side, which gets stored as charge in CDIVx. Determining whether the power transfer is sufficient here will depend mainly on the drive time (tEN) and switching frequency needed. I can check using our calculator tool to confirm the specs if you have those on hand.

In the example below, I am seeing that we can deliver a 50 mA gate trigger current for 6.5 µs at 22.76 kHz.

    Best regards,
    Tilden Chen
