BQ40Z50-R1: RSOC change from waking up after seal and shutdown

Part Number: BQ40Z50-R1

Hi,

We are using a BQ40Z50-R1 with a 1S3P li-ion battery pack (Molicel ICP103450DA, 3.7V 6600mAh).  The ChemID, voltage and capacity are set.  The issue is the Relative State of Charge (RSOC) reading is different after waking up from a Seal and Shutdown.

1.First, the battery is discharged to RSOC=30% to prepare for shipping.
2. Then do a Seal and Shutdown of the battery pack.
3.Once the battery pack is waken up, the RSOC is around 43% (+/- 2%).

This happened to all of our battery packs (20 pilot build sample).  The RSOC stays around 30% if we do not seal and shutdown, but once the unit is sealed & shutdown and waken up, the RSOC jumps to around 40%.

Is that something with the golden image setup or the waking from a seal and shutdown does a recalculation of the RSOC so we get a different number?

Please provide some assistance as we need to get this solved before sending our customer more battery packs.

Thanks,

Dick

  • Hey Dick,

This behavior is expected. After the discharge ends, when the gauge goes into shutdown mode it uses the open circuit voltage to correlate to an SOC value. When the gauge wakes up it is expected that the battery will report an inaccurate SOC value. You will have to either charge or discharge the battery so that the gauge can correct itself.
