BQ79616: connection to VC0

Part Number: BQ79616

Hello,

I'm developping a board with 4 BQ79616 in a stack. The base device communicates to the MCU through serial rx/tx, the other 3 are daisy chained and isolated, including power. My question is about the connection to VC0. In page 187 of the datasheet the drawing shows VC0 connected to the common ground of the device. Is this a requirement or can I only connect it to the negative terminal of the battery? FYI, I'm powering the device externally as in page 191.

Thanks in advance,

Bernie

  • Hello Bernardo,
When you are using the resistor ladder, you want populate J16 to connect CELL0 and CELL0S together and connect both to ground. Additionally, you want to connect J14 to connect VSTACK (connected to Cell16S) to PWR.

CELL0S and CELL16S are the sense lines which are used to measure these cells.

PWR and CELL0 are the power lines which are used to power the board and not for measurement.

When using the resistor ladder, these can be shorted together because we are not worried about any IR drop due to wiring harness.
However, when using a battery, you want these jumpers depopulated so they can be separated and therefore we will have more accuracy on CELL0S and CELL16S.

    Best,

         Quentin
