BQ24040: Short circuit protection for IN and Vss

Part Number: BQ24040

Hi,

I designed a product using the BQ24040.
There is a possibility of IN and Vss shorting due to water exposure.

As far as I can see from BQ24040 Pin FMA, I don't think there will be any damage to the IC even if IN and Vss are shorted.

If there is a possibility of IN and Vss shorting, would it be advisable to add protection circuits?
If adding protection circuits, what type of circuit should be added to the following schematic?

Also, we plan to add a P-MOSFET for protection against reverse input connection.

Best Regards,

  • Hello,

Water exposure is a different type of short as this can affect the whole PCB. I would definitely add protection circuits, as not all other components in your design may be protected. Specifically I would like at hermetically sealing your product against moisture and liquid. We cannot guarantee how the system will behave if submerged.

  • Hi,

    thank you for your reply.
What if only P12 and P13 are shorted instead of the product being completely submerged ?
Only P12 and P13 are exposed outside the case, the rest is sealed.
Is a protection circuit necessary in this case as well?
If adding protection circuits, what type of circuit should be added to the above schematic?

  • Hello,

I do not know what will happen in your system if your P12 and P13 are shorted. Please test according to your application.
