UCC28056: Questions for a "Supports Flyback" feature

Hi experts,

My cusotmer considers to use a single-stage PFC-flyback controller to convert outlet AC into 15V-2A DC for auxillary power supply.

As shown in the image above, I found some PFC controllers have "Supports Flyback" features, and "Flyback" is written for others in topology column. In addition, the others don't have neither "Supports Flyback" features nor "Flyback" in topology column.

Then, could you answer the following questions?

1. What are the differences among these three types? (No.1: "Supports Flyback", No.2: "Flyback" in topology column, No.3: No description regarding Flyback) Is there any difference in its functionality?

2. Can we use UCC28056 as a single-stage PFC-flyback controller? As UCC28056 is newer version than UCC28051, I'd like to recommend UCC28056 if we can use.

3. Are there any other recommendations from you?

  • Hello,

    1.  The converters were specially designed for flyback PFC's such as the TPS92314.  The following link will get you to the data sheet for this device.

    2.  The UCC28056 has an internal multiplier that was designed to work off a boost converters switch node.  I don't believe that it would work of a flyback converters switch node.

    However, the transition mode TPS92314 device was designed for this application and is a better choice for the design.

    "Supports Flyback" features Not designed for flyback PFC, but can be used for flyback PFC.
    Neither of them Cannot be used for flyback PFC.

    2. Are there any documents I can refer to to know more about the internal mechanism of PFC controller. I'd like to understand more deeply what is the difference between the one that can be used for a flyback and the one that cannot be used for a flyback.

    3. I understood TPS92314 is designed for flyback topology. Is it possible to use it not only for LED lighting but also for auxillary power supply(e.g. power supply for gate drivers)?

    >All PFC controllers from TI have a block diagram in the data sheet that will give you a functional schematic.

    >You can use the TPS92314 for none LED applications.
