BQ27Z561-R2: Current consumption during Sleep and deep sleep

Part Number: BQ27Z561-R2
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQSTUDIO

Hi,

I captured with a current probe the current waveform in sleep mode and Deep sleep mode.

Each 1sec i see a pulse of  ~20mS width.

The "voltage time" is set to 10s for both DP and sleep mode.

How do I eliminate these pulses for a better current consumption?

   T hanks Uri

  • Hello Uri,

What is the average iq you are measuring when the gauge is in sleep mode and in deep sleep modes? The iq should be similar to that which is listed in the datasheet spec for the typical value. These spikes you are seeing are when the ADC is taking measurements. The way you would increase these intervals is by increasing the Voltage Time. Additionally, it is suspicious that these spikes are every 1 second, as this is the measurement interval for Normal mode. Please ensure that the gauge is in sleep mode or deep sleep mode.

    Regards,

    Jonny.

  • Hi Jonny,
The iq I measured is 8uA for sleep and 5uA for deep sleep.
I am sure that the device is in sleep mode.
I changed the voltage time to 10sec for sleep mode and deep sleep.
I can see additional spike every 10s.
    What else can I do?
    Thanks
    Uri
  • Hello Uri,

There is not anything else you can do in these power modes. The iq you are seeing is better than what is specd in the device datasheet (see image below). If you are wishing to have a lower iq with this gauge, an option could be to use one of the other power modes such as Hibernate mode. Just keep in mind, the gauge operates differently under the different power modes so please refer to the TRM and datasheet here.

    Regards,

    Jonny.

  • Hi Jonny,

The current that I measured (with current probe and DMM) is not stable.

every 1sec the reading is increasing to ~40uA.

Can you please check what are these spikes seen every 1sec ?

    Is it other ADC readings?

    thanks Uri

  • Hello Uri,

Can you please provide me with the bqStudio gg file for this, so I can look at your configuration? Additionally, the gauge updates parameters every 1s, so this could explain this spike you are seeing.

    Regards,

    Jonny.

  • Hi Jonny,

    see the attached gg file,

also tried in Hibernate mode and disabling the coulomb counting (1s according to the datasheet)

    and still capturing spikes.

    thanks, Uri

  • Hello Uri,

There is not any more tweaking that can be done outside of what you have already done to try and decrease the gauge iq in these different power modes. The device datasheet lists the expected average device iq in the different power modes. These 1s spikes are likely the gauge updating the parameters and this cannot be changed. Please refer to my previous response:
