BQ25720: BQ25720 & BQ40Z50-R2: MCU Required?

Part Number: BQ25720
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ25730, BQ40Z50-R2, BQ40Z50

Referring to BQ25720: Recommended Selection of Charging ICs, the recommendation was a follows:

Good choice! BQ25720 or BQ25730 for fast charging ICs, and BQ40Z50-R2 for the fuel gauge. This is what typical smart battery system uses. You also need a MSP430 MCU as the embedded controller, who communicates with the charger and the gauge.

Can a system using BQ25720 and BQ40Z50-R2 operate autonomously/in standalone during normal operation, i.e. without a host MCU?

I can see a host controller/PC would be required to set parameters etc on the ICs i.e. programming, but is it required after that?
