BQSTUDIO: bqStudio Crashes during startup on one computer

Part Number: BQSTUDIO
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ34Z100EVM, EV2400, BQKEYPACKAGER, BQKEYPROGRAMMER

Hello, I have one Windows 10/11 computer that is used for a battery tester and cycler station and I'm trying to setup bqStudio to log during automated battery cycling, but every time I start up bqStudio on this machine, it gets about 2/3rd of the way through the progress bar on the bqStudio splash screen and then it causes the computer to crash and reboot.  This happens every time.  I've tried updating all drivers on the Windows 10 computer and installing Java 8, as it seems bqStudio might need Java.  None of that worked, so I fully wiped the computer and installed Windows 11 instead, and the same issue still exists after the clean install, and a different OS.  I've never had this issue on any other Windows machine.  It doesn't matter if I have the Windows 10/11 machine connected to the EV2400 (which is connected to the bq34z100EVM) or not, same result either way.

How do I fix this?  Thanks

  • Also, this computer doesn't seem to have any trouble running any other software tools that I've tried, I don't know why bqStudio is different

  • It looks like the OS crash happens when bqStudio is trying to load "com.ti.evswsdk.communication"

    Not sure what that does

  • Hello Adrian,

Are you seeing this behavior on just one computer, or across multiple devices? Something you can try is to run bqStudio as admin on your computer. Additionally, you can try to uninstall the current instance of bqStudio on your device then reinstall the latest version.

    Regards,

    Jonny.

  • This behavior is only on one computer.  I just tried running bqStudio with admin rights and that doesn't change the behavior.  I've also uninstalled/reinstalled many times, but still have the same result that the computer reboots at the bqStudio startup splash screen.  I've tried version 1.3.124 of bqStudio (the latest as of this date I believe) and I've tried version 1.3.101, as that older version has been working well on another computer, but both bqStudio versions cause this test system computer to reboot.  I've tried a clean install of Windows 10 and then a clean install of Windows 11, and was surprised that neither of those OS clean installs fixed this computer.  Maybe that means there is some kind of hardware incompatibility with this machine and bqStudio.  I've not had issues with running any other software on this machine.

This tester computer uses a Kontron COMe-cKL6 computer module mounted on a simple motherboard, the Kontron device is here:  www.kontron.com/.../p146491

  • Hello Adrian,

It doesn't seem like this is an issue with bqStudio, and instead is an issue with your device. I would try to get support from your IT team.

    Regards,

    Jonny.

  • What does bqStudio use?  It seems like it's based on Eclipse and is rumored to use Java.  Do you know what version of Java?  I would like to try other applications that rely on similar tools as bqStudio.  What does it use for the communication portion?  That seems to be the area where it gets stuck.  Thanks

  • Hello Adrian,

Are you able to use other TI tools such as BQKEYPROGRAMMER and BQKEYPACKAGER? Additionally, this seems to be an issue related to your specific device as this behavior is not observed with other devices.

    Regards,

    Jonny.

  • I just ended up buying a new computer for the test system.  The new computer doesn't seem to have any issues running bqStudio.  Thanks

  • Hey Adrian,

Thank you for the update here, I am glad to hear you got this working.

    Regards,

    Jonny.
