TLV740P: Protection for Reverse Current

Part Number: TLV740P
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS731

Hi All,

Customer is considering TLV74018.

I am considering installing a protection diode outside the IC, but the absolute maximum rating of Vout will exceed Vin+0.3 or 3.6V before the protection diode works.
Are there any other suitable protection methods?

Also, please let me know the forward voltage of the diode inside the TLV740 so that I can consider using the external protection first.

Best Regards,

  • Hello Ishiwata-san,

To protect the LDO from reverse current protection, it is advised to either add a Shottky diode in series with the input or to place the Shottky diode from OUT to IN. The first configuration prevents reverse current from flowing but will add to the overall dropout of the device. The second configuration allows reverse current to flow but it will bypass the LDO. This configuration will not contribute to increased dropout either.

The third option is to select an LDO with built-in reverse current protection. TPS731 is an example.
