[FAQ] BQ25618: How does the charge safety timer work for BQ25618, BQ25618E, BQ25619, BQ25611D, and BQ25616?

Part Number: BQ25618
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ25619, , , BQ25616, BQ25611D

The safety timer for the BQ25618, BQ25618E, BQ25619, BQ25611D, and BQ25616 functions as a protection against prolonged charging caused by abnormal battery charging status. The precharge safety timer is 2 hours and the fast charge safety timer is default 10 hours. For I2C parts (all except BQ25616), the fast charge safety timer can be changed to 5 hours.

An interrupt will be generated and the CHRG_FAULT bits will be set to 11 when the timer expires.

By default, the precharge and fast charge safety timers are counted at half clock rate when in input voltage, input current, JEITA cool, or thermal regulation. For I2C parts (all except BQ25616) the half clock rate can be disabled via TMR2x_EN bit.

The safety timer can be disabled in I2C parts.
