TUSB1044: estimate whether TUSB1044 can meet the design requirement

Part Number: TUSB1044

Hi David,

Our customer's topology is SOC->MB to UB Connector->Cable->MB to UB Connector->Redriver->Type-C Connector. Does the Suggested Pre-channel Trace Length include the length of the cable? Or just PCB trace length?

2. Is below requirement a must?

Regarding the topology of the illustration, #Via will exceed the spec, unless the signal line all route at surface layers, which is difficult for customer

3. Please confirm if the driving capabilities of pre-channel and post-channel are 8dB for Host to re-driver and 1.5dB for re-driver to Connector according to below description?

Best Regards,

Jaden Yue

Our customer's topology is SOC->MB to UB Connector->Cable->MB to UB Connector->Redriver->Type-C Connector. Does the Suggested Pre-channel Trace Length include the length of the cable? Or just PCB trace length?

Given the loss the cable, the tool only provides the recommended PCB trace length pre and post the re-driver, not the cable.

    2. Is below requirement a must?

This is not a hard requirement. But via introduces reflection, more via you have, the more reflection there will be. A re-driver can't clean up the reflection which will impact the signal integrity. So it is recommended to have as less via as possible to reduce the reflection.

    3. Please confirm if the driving capabilities of pre-channel and post-channel are 8dB for Host to re-driver and 1.5dB for re-driver to Connector according to below description?

This is not a hard requirement, the length depends on the PCB material, the SOC and device TX and RX compensation capability. The spreadsheet aims to provide a more flexible calculation than what is in the datasheet.

Please use the attached latest version of the spreadsheet,

  • Hi David,

Could you please help check if below topology is workable particularly customer is concerning about the number of vias but they have to keep 2 vias design.

Because our datasheet recommends no more than 1 VIA so customer is cautious about it and want to check if we can modify the datasheet to loose the requirement of number of VIAs. I have pushed back this requirement but still they need our confirmation that 2 VIA is achievable. Do you have any concern on it?

    Best Regards,

The 1 via is not a hard requirement, but I would recommend keeping the via count to 2 or less.

I am more concerned with the loss of the 7.2in cable. We may able to pass the USB TX compliance, but may fail the USB RX compliance since TUSB1044 will not able to provide much compensation for this cable loss.

    Thanks
