LM7480-Q1: Load dump for 48V systems

Part Number: LM7480-Q1

Hi!

I have 48V battery (12S)

I have Inductive load that can be disconnected (motor connected with ESC)

I think I need to protect MOSFETs 60V (Q2). Will load dump (Q1) protect Q2 from the drop of inductive load? Should I choose for Q2 higher voltage (80V) and Q1 (250V->300V)?

Where can I calculate Zener and MOSFET voltage ratings?

How else should I modify standard load dump schematics?

I didn't find any manuals from TI for 48V ORing protection.

Thanks

  • Hi Stas,

200V load dump is an automotive standard due to which this schematic is recommended. In your case you have to find out the level of transient first. After you find that out, we can recommend input suppression.

Just for your help, zener should at clamp at 60V only since the controller is rated for it. You need to stay within the limits of its power rating. MOSFET now depends on level of transient. Although, I am unsure if there will be any transients on the input though according to our previous conversation.

  • So maybe I don't need to care about load dump at all?

I am now at RnD, I am free to start with any solution, I am just seeking guidance where to start.

  • Hi Stas,

Closing the thread here as it duplicating the on-going conversation.
