LM74900-Q1: Behavior of IC during typical limit current and short circuit current.

Part Number: LM74900-Q1

Good morning ,

Based on the calculations in the Excel sheet, I've set the typical current limit at 2.5A and the short circuit current at 4A, with a full load current of 2A. My question is: what will happen if the load reaches 3A? Will the IC turn off the gate driver, or will it attempt to limit the current to 2A?

Value of CTMR = 68.2NF

Could someone please provide a step-by-step explanation of what will happen under this conditions?

Thank you.

  • Hi Shrey,

When load reaches 3A, or as it crosses 2.5A. A blanking timer (selected by CTMR) will start which if expired will signal controller to turn OFF the FET and not limit the current. Now if the controller is in auto retry mode, after 32 charge-discharge cycles, controller will retry to check if overcurrent fault is cleared. If the device is in lach-off mode, the device will need a power restart to clear the latch.

If current reaches 4A (short-circuit limit) before the over current timer is expired, the device will ignore that timer and immediately turn off the FET as short-circuit is 2nd level of protection and does the job instantly.

As shown in the datasheet, point A has a short duration OC and point B has prolonged OC as timer that I referred to expired. After which HGATE has fallen.

  • Hi Sir,

It means under normal condition or we can say at NO LOAD condition ,voltage at CTMR pin is 0V. But i observed that in my design voltage at CTMR is not 0V. I am unable to find the reason behind this. Could you please assist with this issue.

  • Hi Shrey,

Yes, CTMR should see 0V. What is the voltage that you see though?

Can you share waveforms at normal operation.

Please measure the following signals : VIN HGATE IMON IIN
