BQ79656EVM-021: PARTID IS WRONG

Hello,

I am using BQAutoEval to read the PARTID out of the BQ79656 that is installed on my BQ79656EVM-021 board. As you can see from below, I am reading out 0x22 but the datasheet says the PARTID for a BQ79656 should be 0x04. Why are they different?

The marking on the chip are:

12A2C1W

BQ79656

G4 (G4 is underlined).

I am reading back 0x22 from register 0x0501.

Hi Ray,

Can you check the FAULT_OTP register (0x0535) to confirm if this is a register space error?

I did a Single Device Read to board 00 and I got back 00. See below. This was, of course, after a Wake up and auto addressing.

Hi Ray,

Thanks for reading the register. This confirms that the factory registers are programmed correctly. Could you read 0x500 and read 10 registers from it so that we may have the die_id?

I see 0x04 instead of 0x22 on another 656 EVM. I am reviewing this with our test team.

Hi Ray,

Speaking with the test team, they said this specific IC is a very old IC. This is most likely a pre-production IC which is why the part id is different than what is stated in the datasheet. I would recommend not using this IC.

This IC is on a development BQ79656EVM-021 kit. Can TI exchange it for a newer board, FOC?
