TPS62180: Minimum thermal shutdown rising threshold

Hi team,

Could you let me know the minimum value of Thermal Shutdown (Rising junction temperature=160℃(Hysteresis20℃))?
When my customer's system is operating, TPS62180YZFR suddenly output PG=low and the output voltage goes down.
When the behavior above occurs, the customer's system temperature around TPS62180YZFR is ~130℃.
So it does't match 160℃ specified in the datasheet.

They would like to check the possibility to shutdown in the temperature lower than 160℃.

Hi Sir,

160C is junction temperature(TJ) which cause TSD. It is not ambient temperature(TA) .

The TJ=TA+RθJA *P_loss, so it may meet TSD with TA=130C ambient temperature.

Thank you for checking.

The information previously I conveyed was partially wrong. Let me correct the situation.

TA was not 130C. My customer actually measured case top temperature with thermocouple.

So TC=130C. As RθJCtop is 0.3℃/W in the datasheet, it seems like the junction temperature is smaller than 160C.

Also, VIN=12V, VOUT=5V, IOUT=3A when the thermal shutdown was triggered.

Hi Sir,

We should believe the TSD of TJ is 160C in datasheet, but it would be unprecise to get case top temperature if we don't measure at once when meet TSD.

Because TSD has hysteresis to recover and the case top temperature will go down after TSD.

BTW, we don't suggest customer to use it at TJ>=125C, the feature and performance cannot be guaranteed in such temperature.

Hi Colin-san,

OK, I told my customer know that they cannot use the device with 130C case top temperature.

They mentioned that they tested the system under the condition with unsufficient cooling, and found the TPS62180 triggers TSD under Tc=130C.

So they want to make sure the accurate TSD threshold.

Can we provide the minimum TSD rising threshold as a reference (We don't need to guarantee).

Sorry, we don't guarantee what the minimum TSD is and should regard the 160C is typical TSD temperature.

As I mentioned, my customer doesn't neccesarily want the value we can guarantee.

Can we provide the design target tolerance (+/- x%) of TSD or something like that?

Hi Sir,

I have checked with TE, the feedback is the we can guarantee Tj<=150C wouldn't trigger TSD, but above that there is low risk to meet.

We still think the type temperature of TSD is 160C.
