UCC21222: Asymmetric H-bridge converter design for Switched reluctance motor Drive

Part Number: UCC21222
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UCC21330

Tool/software:

Hello,

I want to drive a four phase SRM using Launchpad-F28379d as a controller. I was hoping for any reference design relevant to Asymmetric H- Bridge converter. I have developed a conveter which uses UCC21222 as dual channel gate driver for one phase, but I have been facing challenges due DSP getting disconnected may be to due improper design or EMI/EMC. Any reference design or help regarding the design of Asymmetric H-bridge converter is highly appreciated.

Thanks

  • Hey Sumit,

Here's a link to a standard half-bridge reference design, which will help getting started with the UCC21222 design: https://www.ti.com/tool/PMP40500#description

With UCC21222 being a relatively older part, we do also recommend potentially switching to the newer UCC21330 for your future design. It has enhanced specs, as well as better cost structure and quality coverage when compared to the UCC21222. The UCC21330 does have the same pinout and package size as the UCC21222.

    Best regards,

    Will

  • Thank you Will, actually I wish to develop a power converter of 10KW rating for motor drive application. The reference design is for some other application. Any other reference design you could suggest which uses the similar kind of IC and can be controlled using Launchpad F28379d. and I will definitely go for UCC21330, thanks for the suggestion. Another thing is that I have no idea of EMI/EMC in the Power PCB, I have developed a prototype of the converter, which is having issues like noise and also Launchpad is getting disconnected from the computer.

  • Thank you for the additional info, Sumit. I believe this reference design is going to be closer to your application. It's rated for a 10kW motor drive application, and it interfaces with the Launchpad F28379d that you mentioned. Let me know if this helps!

  • Thanks it is closer to my application. One more thing can you help me with, my DSP is getting disconnected from pc whenever my Mosfet switches at higher dc link voltage. Do you know how to resolve this? what could be the reason?

  • So far, it sounds like there could be a coupling issue at the layout level. If you have any pictures of the layout, I can review it to make sure the issue is not pertaining to the gate driver.
