LM2596S-ADJEVM: LM2596-ADJ cheaper options

Part Number: LM2596S-ADJEVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM2596, LMR51430

Tool/software:

Hello, I am using LM2596 adjustable version buck converter. I have Vin 24 V and need to output 5 and 12 V, 3A (voltage is adjusted with feedback loop resistors and transistor). Current converter suits my needs. but it heats up a bit, but it also might be a problem with current diode and inductor that I use (Diode forward current is 2.2 A, inductor saturation current is 2.5 A). But maybe there are similar cheaper alternatives to this buck converter?

  • Hello,

Based on the description of your diode and inductor, neither of them are properly rated for this device. The catch diode should have a current rating equal to the maximum high-side current limit of the device. The inductor also needs to have a saturation current rating for the high-side current limit of the device. For the LM2596, the maximum current limit is listed as 7.5A. Both components should be changed because neither is properly rated for the current limit of the device or the maximum load of the described design.

For the device to function properly, all of the recommendations in the datasheet must be followed.

A newer alternative device is the LMR51430.

    Best regards,

    Ridge
