TPS631011: Device selection and switching during mode transitions

Part Number: TPS631011
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS61020

Tool/software:

Hi support team,
Can the TPS631011 be used under the following conditions?
Will the switching be intermittent during mode transitions between boost, buck, and 3-cycle buck-boost, causing noise?

VIN = 2.7 ~ 5.5V
VOUT = 5.2V
IOUT = 180mA(typ), 510mA(max)
MODE = High (FPWM)

Regards,
Dice-K

  • Hi  Dice-K,

    TPS631011 is suitable for your application,

    Yes, there will be some noise during mode transition, but amplitude ripple caused by mode transition is small. Do you have a target value of this additional ripple?

  • Hi Tao,
    Thank you for your reply.

    The application is a portable recorder, so I would like to reduce audio noise.
    I am using the TPS61020 in FPWM, but the switching becomes intermittent when the VIN = VOUT setting area, and this is output as noise on the audio side.
    When using the TPS631011 in FPWM, I think it would be effective as a noise suppression device if it is constant at 2MHz even when the VIN = VOUT setting area.
    I would appreciate any comments on whether the switching of the TPS631011 is intermittent.

    Best regards,
    Dice-K

  • Hi  Dice-K,

    Take picture below as ref. it is a line sweep test, and device goes through buck/boost/buck-boost mode. i think it is very clear from Vout side.

  • Hi Tao,
    Thank you for your reply.

    Figures 9-7 to 9-10 show the switching waveforms of a 1-A load, which are operating at 2MHz.
    www.ti.com/.../tps631011.pdf
    I would like to know if the frequency drops when transitioning with FPWM.
    Are there any data available?

    The question is whether there is a moment when the frequency is not 2MHz even as the input voltage, that is, the battery voltage, decreases.

    Best regards,
    Dice-K

  • Hi  Dice-K,

    2Mhz is stable once device is switching.

    Tao

  • Hi Tao,
    Thank you for your support.

    I would like to confirm the meaning of this sentence.
    "2Mhz is stable once device is switching."

    Which of the following is true?
    "2MHz is stable once device has started up."
    or
    "2MHz is stable once device has completed the mode transition."

    Best regards,
    Dice-K

  • Hi Dice-K,

    No matter there is a mode transition or not, once device is in FPWM mode, then the switching frequency is a fixed 2Mhz.
