TPS2421-2 issue

I am having a bit of an issue with a TI chip. I assume I do have an explanation but would like to get it double checked.

The circuit looks pretty much like in the datasheet with
Vin =~9V, Cout is 10uF (and some more at the load but via a Schottky diode), Rset =220K, Cct=2.2uF

The issue I have is that on some systems I only get ~0.8V at the output.

My assumption is that when I remove the system supply Vin (which can happen in my circuit) all other parallel load pulls Vin down and the energy from Cout flows back through the body diode and blows the FET. Could that cause this type of behaviour?

  • I suppose there could be some discharge of the load capacitance through the body diode of the FET to other power supply loads. That shouldn't blow the FET. There is, I expect, a primary discharge of the load capacitance on the load side.

What's the issue with the 0.8V at the output?
