BQ24073: ESP32-S2 with LiPo Battery

Hello,

I want to design a USB-C powered device which charges the LiPo-2000mAh Battery while powers the ESP32-S2 MCU at the same time.

I've found this BQ24073 IC but I'm not sure if this IC fits as a best solution for this use case. Do you have other recommendations?

I'm also not sure what else do I need besides the BQ24073.

Hi Arthur,

Thank you for reaching out via E2E. The BQ24073 is designed to be able to charge a battery while powering other components such as an MCU at the same time.

In regards to if the part is a good fit what is your desired charge current and required current draw of the ESP32-S2 MCU? Please keep in mind the BQ24073 is rated for up to 1.5A output current which must be shared between MCU power draw and battery charging.

Additionally, we no not currently have a charger IC which can perform a USB type C negotiation. A separate component will be needed for that purpose.

Dear Garrett,

Thanks for your quick reply.

I will need 500mA for the battery charge. So 1.5A seems to be enough together with the ESP32-S2.

So which component you can suggest for the USB-C negotiation?

Hi Arthur,

Could you please elaborate on your requirements for the USB Type-C input?

- Is this a 5V/3A USB-C only port? Or is this a USB-C PD port (needed for negotiating higher voltages)?

- What is the power role of the USB-C port? Is this sink-only?

Hi Aya,

Thanks for supporting this topic.

No, the Port will be used only to charge a 3.7V/2000mAh LiPo and with power path run the ESP32-S2 MCU with 3.3V and data transfer to the MCU but for mass rollout production the circuits will be later cut off.

I think it could be a laptop, power bank or any other standard charger that can be plugged in into the USB-C port. No need to negotiate higher voltages than the needed ones.

Hi Arthur,

My understanding is that the USB-C port is sink-only (i.e. sinking power from a power source such as a power bank, laptop, or standard charger).

Please note the input voltage/current recommendations on the BQ24073 below. Is 5V/1.5A USB-C input sufficient for your design?

Hi Aya,

yes, the 5V/1.5A is enough. The load on the MCU is really very minimalistic and I'll need 500mA to charge the battery.

So back to my initial question, is the BQ24073 a good fit for this needs? And do I need anything else to consider in my design, or is the BQ24073 enough?
