TPS4811-Q1: TPS48111

Part Number: TPS4811-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM5149,

Tool/software:

Dear All,

for a new project in develepment of a 28V 3,5A, 6,5A and 12,5A power supply with 2 lead acid batterie back-up, we have 2 indipendent output originally protected by standard glass fuses.

To prevent bad replace of fuses by installer men and prevent the damage the power suppy, before to finish the project, we want to evaluate the electronic fuse, but we prefer the short circuit protection in latch-off in hardware, indipendent by firmware.

We are seeing the TPS48111 model (latch-off model)... is it a right choise of there're other solutions?

The main request is this component is enough robust against the ouput shortircuit to ground, with power supply from LM5149 dc-c controller or directly from batteries that is up to 65Ah.

Then does TPS48111 have a good current monitor upto 12,5A? In this case, whihc is the precision?

Thank You and Best Regards

Federico Battaglin

  • *sorry: 30V for battery charger

  • Hi Federico

    Welcome to E2E!

Are you power muxing between 2 lead acid batteries ? If yes, please look at page 9 in https://www.ti.com/lit/an/snoaa94/snoaa94.pdf?ts=1717777112738&ref_url=https%253A%252F%252Fwww.google.com%252F

    BR,

    Rakesh

  • Dear Rakech,

thank You for your welcome (even if I have an old account with the same name) and for your fast reply!

The 2 batteries are in serie in orderto have 27,6V, that are charged directlyfrom LM5149 change the voltage in order control, using a shunt, the current... and it's clear the voltageis the voltage ofbatteries.

The probem is that we have 2 indipendet outputs and we want to replace the glass fuse, one for each outputs, with an high side switch with bevaiour if fuse... So the question is if TPS48111 is enough robust to resist against the short circuit powere by batteries (that have more energy rather than LM5149 dc-dc).

Then I noted your application note that describes the use of LM74910 as ideal diode or high side switch with short circuit protction in latch-off... Which are the difference between these two chips?

    Thank You

    Federico

  • Hi Federico

LM74910 is more suitable for automotive applications where we need to meet ISO pulses. The ideal diode function helps to pass the system for ISO transients through its active reverse current blocking feature.

Where as TPS4811-Q1 is more applicable for designs to replace mechanical relays, circuit breaker with active component MOSFETs.

TPS48111 provides short circuit protection in <1us. The two level protection would help to pass transient load currents for duration set by TMR emulating fuse like characteristics.

    BR,

    Rakesh

  • Good Morning Rakesh,

ok, I understand... in effect the short protection response time is more fast in TPS48111... In this spceific application we need to replace the glass fuses...

    Thank You!
