BQ79616-Q1: Cell Balancing On Stack Devices

Part Number: BQ79616-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ79616

Tool/software:

Hey there,
In our BMS design, we have BQ79616 being used along with 32 BMS circuits in a stack format, which are rated at 1500V and communicate using a daisy chain. The documentation explains the valid cell balancing algorithm for a single BQ79616 design. It details how the algorithm can balance up to 8 cells within itself using internal MOSFET. While this method works well for individual BMS circuits, it doesn't provide enough information on how to perform cell balancing between BMS circuits when they are stacked together. However, I could not see sufficient explanations in the documents for cell balancing between BMS circuits connected to each other as a stack. I'd like to understand how to handle cell balancing when BMS circuits are connected in a stack. Any ideas?

  • Hello Nazli,

The passive cell balancing on the BQ79616 is independent of other devices on the stack. So only the cells handled by a BQ79616 are balanced and not with other cells in the stack. You have the flexibility to individually configure the cell balancing for each device on the stack or to configure them all the same.

    Best regards,

    Barry
