Hi Nick,

The EV2400 is in a box so I am not sure where one can check that VBus voltage.

All four LEDs on the EV2400 are lit.

Do I need to open up the EV2400 to make some measurements?

Okay, however, I still don't know what the error means, it is rather vague so knowing what to test is a challenge.

Followed the instructions in the linked post:

1. Check the VBUS test point on the EVM with respect to a GND test point, it should be 5V from the PC. CORRECT

2. Check the 3.3V test point also, it should be a regulated 3.3V. CORRECT

3. Check in the windows 10 Device Manager under Human Interface Devices. CORRECT

4. I ran the EV2400 updater and it did not find the EV2400.

5. I ran the update with the "-s" option, as prompted, it ran and exited with no status/error reports.

Please advise of the next step, this is causing a delay in project development.

If you have another computer accessible to you, can you please try testing this on a different computer. The issue might be with the computer you are using.

When you ran the EV2400 firmware updater, did you close out all BQStudio application you may had open?

When you originally open BQStudio, does it show that any devices are auto detected?

Interesting, can you please send me the schematic of the custom PCB you are using for your application. On your end, can you please verify that the gauge on the PCB is being properly powered such that voltage is being measured on the BAT pin.

The custom PCB is not connected to the EV2400. I also tried connecting it to the BQ27Z561 EVM, same result.

Just to verify, so when the EV2400 is connected to the BQ27z561 EVM that is does not auto detect in BQStudio even when the EVM is fully powered on and this is also seen on the custom PCB when the EV2400 is connect to it?

If that is the case then there is an issue with the EV2400 (possible got damaged) or the computer being used (customers before stated that when trying the EV2400 on a different computer works)

I have not tried with the EVM fully powered. 

My understanding is the EV2400 should at least be detected by the updater, using the updater the target PCB is not involved. In fact, I attached a 'scope to the I2C output of the EV2400 and there is no activity at all. BQStudio and updater both say they cannot connect to the EV2400.

Your understanding is correct, that the updater should detect the EV2400. Since this is not the case, I believe that the EV2400 you are using got damaged some how, possibly from ESD.

Only other thing I can now recommend is trying this on a different computer. Are you using windows 11? There have been many reports of the EV2400 not working on windows 11.

As I said before, I do not have another computer, plus. this is the same computer that has been used on this project for over a year, working well with the EV2400.

This shot-gun approach to debugging this issue is not good. Are there not logs somewhere from BQStudio that can give real data rather than guessing?

I am just asking you the same questions and recommendations that I would ask anyone that experience issues similar to the issue you are seeing. One thing I overlooked originally is you stated:

Are you saying this pull ups are implemented on your custom PCB side? If so then these pull ups are not necessary since the EV2400 already implements pull ups on the communication lines. The pull ups on your PCB could be causing issues.

That is for sure not the issue, the same fault occurs without the EV2400 connected to a target, and also when it is connected to an EVM. 

So, to return to my question; are there logs that can be examined so we can collect facts about the situation?

There are not any associated logs for this. Please try using the EV2400 with another computer as suggested by Nick. We are suggesting this to rule out anything with the HW and instead, this could be related to your computer. Additionally, can you please provide us with a screenshot of your device manager before and after you plug in the EV2400 to your computer. Finally, can you uninstall the current version of bqStudio and reinstall the latest version of bqStudio onto your computer?

2. Ev2400 NOT connected -> Device manager shows 6 USB Input Devices.

. EV2400 connected -> Device manager shows 7 USB devices. The new device is VID:0451 PID 0037.

3. I uninstalled and installed BQStudio

Situation is still the same.

I keep asking, but so far, I have no answer; What does "No free adapters are available for use on this system?"

This morning I carefully hooked up the EVM and the EV2400, together with the charger EVM and a battery. This is the configuration I used over a period of months during the development of the custom PCB. It is also the setup to work with TI to get a custom ChemID. BQStudio did not recognize the EV2400 on startup:

Hello Sid, 

The first 4 screenshots you have sent are because you do not have an EVM powered and connected to the EV2400. These first 4 screenshots are not related to the EV2400. In order for bqStudio to auto connect to a device and not show the first 3 screenshots you have sent, you need to have an EVM properly powered and connected to the EV2400 and your computer, and you must have the correct .bqz file in your config folder of bqStudio that correlates to the Firmware version you are using on the EVM. Please power and connect an EVM to the EV2400, and ensure you have the .bqz file that correlates to the FW version you are using in the config folder of bqStudio to avoid the first few screenshots you have received.

No I do not have another EVM.

As I have said previously when I was trying to use my custom PCB, the MCU on that board is able to communicate with the BQ27Z561. I have placed a 'scope on the I2C bus and there is not activity from the EV2400.

IMHO the fault has nothing to do with the EVM, the EV2400, or the custom PCB.

Stil, nobody has said what the error displayed means, why not?

The EV2400 is connected to the custom PCB with three "fly-wires" attached to SDA, SCL, GND. The board has jumpers between the BQ27Z561 and the MCU, these are removed when the EV2400 is connected.

Really! That is the firmware updater for the EV2400, If the EV2400 cannot be found it will do nothing!

This is so not true. The TS pin is an INPUT for an OPTIONAL external temperature sensor. It has nothing to do with BQStudio connecting with the EVM or my custom PCB. The custom PCB does not use an external temperature sensor.

And, to ask for the third or fourth time, what does the error displayed by BQStudio mean. Makes me think that nobody in this thread knows!

And ... frustration continues to rise. In addition, I now have a client who is asking if using this TI part was the right decision.

As I reported earlier, when I run the firmware updater with the EVM connected it reports it has not detected any EV2400s. This is in spite of the EV2400 enumerating on the PC.

You keep mentioning installing the driver for the EV2400, however, you have not given a URL where that may be downloaded. On my Windows PC both the EV2400 module and the EVM for the BQ27Z561 enumerate as "HID" class devices. As I asked before, is this correct?

At present I have the EVM connected via a USB capture probe. USB enumeration happens as expected, however, the PC NEVER attempts to communicate with the EVM when BQStudio is run.

So, outstanding questions:

1. Is the EV2400 an HID class device?

2. If it is NOT an HID class device what is the download URL for the required driver?

Hello Nick, thanks for the confirmation. Both the EV2400 and the EVM are enumerating as HID class devices.

Beyond buying a new PC I seem to be at an impasse here, unable to load my Golden Image into the device on my custom PCB or the EVM.

It is hard to believe there are no other debugging steps that can be taken?

There is not much else I can recommend in terms of solutions. Possibly get a new USB B to USB A connector to see if the cable is bad.

I saw in a very old post that connecting a jumper on JP7 on the EV2400 solve an issue similar to this. You can try this on the EV2400 you have with the casing opened up.

Hi Nick, I pulled a very old Microsoft Surface Pro 3 from storage, installed BQStudio, and successfully connected to the BQ27Z561 on our custom PCB. At least this will allow me to make progress.

The burning question is what is stopping the EV2400 working on my main development machine. I find it hard to believe there is not some kind of log, somewhere, that could help get this fixed.

I do not know what happened to cause this issue. It is most likely some sort of setting or environment variable change on your system. We sadly do not have output logs for this device.
