TPSM846C23: Fluctuations in VOUT value and regulator output fails

Part Number: TPSM846C23

Tool/software:

We are programming the TPSM846C23 regulator to 0.85V. We notice the VOUT value fluctuates from the programmed value and regulator goes into OFF state.

We are using 'fusion digital power designer' application for programming.

OCF & OCV faults are observed.

Please let us know if we need to adjust any special registers.

F_sw=350kHz, Compensation network, 1k & 1000pF.

Voltage input = 12V, V_out=0.85V@ 35A

    Are you seeing this issue with both 0A and 35A load?

    Can you attach the schematic? I'm sensing it could be related to components/stability.

    Also can you attach the XML file to see the commands side? This can be done by going to: Fusion digital power designer > click to configure device > file > export... > ProjectFile > export all checked formats

  • Hi Eileen,

    Thanks for your suggestion - we tried few combinations of compensation network and F_sw. The combination of compensation network ( 2.2nf+470 Ohm) & f_sw=1MHz is working for our application. Now the V_out is stable as programmed.

    Testing at full load is under progress.

    In continuation from the above, we are facing issue as the load value is increased. The device trips at 7A.

    We connected the external DC electronic load to the regulator output. The current limits are at 37A (for warning) and 42A for fault as seen from the 'fusion' G UI.

    Are there any specific registers that need to be programmed further?

  • Now the Switching frequency is 1MHz and RC network is adjusted to 470 Ohm + 2.2nF.

  • Hi Harikrishna,

    Based on the Vout and Vin in your design, plus the minimum on-time max of the device, fsw shouldn't go higher than 680kHz. Suggest lowering it to at least 650kHz -> Rt=31k-ohm. If you go below 600kHz, make sure to update DIFFO RC network. according to table 3.

    If that doesn't work, you can try increasing soft start time through Fusion GUI by programming command (0x61)TON_RISE. By default it should be set to 3ms, you can increase it higher than that, max is 100ms. It's possible that there's inrush current false tripping the OCP.

    We tried with 650KHz - but the voltage itself not stable. Hence, reverted to 1MHz only.

    TON_rise also tried with 72, but no improvement. The VR trips at 7A. We don't see any current overshoot of output current but the OCF& OCW messages are shown in the GUI.

    I have reviewed the .xml file and didn't see anything wrong with the values.

    If you try to increase the IOUT OC fault to 52A(max) through Fusion GUI, do you still see the shutdown?

    Another thing to check is VS+/VS- pins, ideally this should be routed close to the load after the output caps as a tightly coupled differential pair, this traces should also be kept away from switching/noise. VS+ seems to be connected VOUT before the caps through R301 (try removing R). Connecting them differently could affect voltage regulation. 

    Also if possible, could you run a bode test at 0A and 7A(max current)? That way we could look more in depth into stability, typically we would like to see a Gain margin of at least -12dB and Phase Margin of at least 40-45degrees.

    We have identified the issue with VR load testing – there is one capacitor present between the sense lines (this part has flown from legacy designs).

    This part is made DNI now and we are able to test the board till 35A.
