TPS65987D: TPS65987D USB-IF certification

Part Number: TPS65987D
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS25751

Tool/software:

Hello,

I am exploring the feasibility of achieving USB-IF certification of a new product using the TPS65987DDH PD controller.

The datasheet for this device states that the silicon is certified to PD 3.0 (TID #1067). The project uses firmware version F707.10.10, which appears to be the latest version, last updated October 2021.

I would be grateful if you could answer the following questions:

  1. What is the latest revision and version of the USB-PD specification that you expect this device to be certifiable to? The current USB-IF Vendor Information File (v3.30) does not allow the PD specification revision or version to be specified lower than Rev 3.1 v1.3 (reference: 'The Complete PD Specification Number shall be greater than or equal to 3113h’ i.e. v3.1 1.3').
  2. Are there any firmware updates planned for this device to support with more recent revisions of the PD specification?
  3. If N, what equivalent device would TI suggest we consider migrating to in order to achive new USB-IF certification?
  4. To conduct USB-IF testing a VIF file is required - for the device we are using the approriate application note appears to be TI document SLVA892A, however this does not appear to have been revised since September 2019. Is a more recent application note available?

I look forward to your response.

Kind regards,

David

  • Hi David,

Is this for a new product? Or are you wanting to get USB-IF certification for a product already in product that uses the TPS65987D?

If this is for a new project, I would recommend looking at some of our newer devices. Devices like the TPS25751 are able to support the new PD3.1 specification. Like you mentioned in your original posting, the TPS65987DDH is a PD3.0 device and will not be able to support the latest PD3.1 requirements.

  • Hi Adam,

Thanks for your prompt response. Our product is currently in development; when the TPS65987D device was selected details of the TPS25751 were not available (I note that this is a new part). Functionaly, the PD3.0 device meets our requirements, however now I understand that it will not be possible to certify this due to the narrow window that USB-IF allow for new product certification following base standard publication. We will consider the TPS25751 (or similar) device if/when we iterate the design.

    Kind regards,

    David

  • however now I understand that it will not be possible to certify this due to the narrow window that USB-IF allow for new product certification following base standard publication.

Unfortunately this is correct. We are still interoperable with PD3.1 and PD3.2 systems, but you will not be able to formally certify the TPS65987D
