BQ25798EVM: Is it critical that a net tie be used between AGND and PGND

Hi,

I've been looking at the EVM for the BQ25798 IC and I see a NET-TIE is used between AGND and PGND on pin 27 as shown from the extract below. 

What can go wrong if only one GND is used instead of splitting them (planes)? Is it strictly necessary.
