BQ24747 configuration for multi chemistry support

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ78PL116, BQ24747

How can the BQ24747 be used to support multiple chemistries during startup?  Is there a list of chemistries and their charge characteristics/profiles/charge times like in the .chem files used in the BQ78PL116?

We want to implement a system that accepts multiple battery chemistries with industry standard battery sizes (i.e. like a bunch of cell phone lithium ion batteries to make a battery pack, alkaline or even lead-acid).   It should charge, monitor and have protection circuitry to prevent overcharging from an AC input.  We believe that the combination of the BQ24747 and BQ20Z75-180 should work.  Should we store the charge configuration information in an external EEPROM or something?  Is there another set of devices that can implement this?

  • bq24747 is a host control charger. The charge profile is totally controlled by the host. So, the host micro-processor should store the charge configuration information or read it out from the battery pack. And then, the host controller send commands to charger.
