Output current distribution of BQ24123 for battery charging and system load

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24123

Hi,

For BQ24123, we would like to know how the IC's output current gets distributed for charging the battery as well as feeding the system load ? Our input power supply to this BQ24123 is 9V @ 2.5A and Battery spec is 7.4V @ 2.2A. We are using topology 3 from "SLUA376.pdf" app note.

  • Please refer to the Functional Block diagram.  The current going into the IC is the input for the charger and goes to the battery.

The power path (external FETs) should have the input FETs on and BAT FET off when there is input power, so the input will be supplying power to the system.

If you need to know if the input power is going to the system or battery, you will have to monitor each leg of the input.  Both the system and chargers are set up to pull whatever current they want, so the adaptor should be designed to deliver the total current.

  • Hi,

Thanks for the inputs. We are clear about the power flow path now.

Considering the case where we have the main power supply say just 9V @2A, what percentage of current will be going to battery charger to charge the full drained battery and what percentage of current will be going to feed the entire system load (ie., at load max of 1.8A) ?

    Warm regards,

    Prajwal Kini A.
