TPS23730: PoE chip for daisy chain IP camera

Part Number: TPS23730TPS23731
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS23731

Tool/software:

Hi,

Need help in finding a PoE chip that can handle daisy chain PoE with GigaBit Ethernet like in the picture below:

The network switch chip I will be using is RTL8363NB-VB-CG. Which PoE chip will be best suitable in this case? The application design is for a IP Camera. Power requirements 12V 15W peak max per camera, total 16 cameras will be on a single line.

  • Hi Basit,

Are you looking for a PSE device for sending the power out of your switch, or for the daisy chain application?

How many devices in total will be in the daisy chain? The maximum power for a PSE to send out is 90W, which is 71W at the PD side, this is assumign 100M of cable loss. Therefore, you will need to consider the max power per PSE plus max device/distance.

    Regards,

    Brandon

  • Hi Brandon

I am looking for the daisy chain application. Thank you for giving overview about the maximum PSE and about maximum 71W at the PD side. I will try to lower my IP camera power requirements to about 6W - 8W so that I can support more cameras.

Actually I needed help at the PD side in the daisy chain application maybe its called pass-through so something else. I am desiging an IP camera with daisy chain topology for both power and data. So the first camera in line receives data and power from the one RJ45 port, data goes in the switch IC adds and continues from the other RJ45 port. The power is also forwarded/continues on the second RJ45 port and so on in a daisy chain manner.

In the forum search I also came to know that there was some presentation video about daisy chaining power and data but I am unable to find it. Is TPS23731 suitable for this application or any other chip.

  • Thank you for your query.

TI Dallas is closed for the Fourth of July holiday. Please expect delays during this time.

    Thank you for your understanding.

  • Hi,
    Thanks Alex. Will be waiting

  • Hi Basit,

TPS23731 is rated for 25.5W applications at the PD. The best device I would recommend here is TPS2372-4, which is a standalone PD capable of up to 71W at the PD side, which can pass through power to the PSE.

I have sent you a direct message, please reach out to me via email and I will share the daisy chain presentation and recommendation.

    Regards,

    Brandon
