TPS65988DJEVM: Port A resets after flashing the default configuration.

Part Number: TPS65988DJEVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS65988DJ, , TPS65988DKEVM, TPS65988DK, TPS65987DDK

Tool/software:

Dear TI,

I have set up the IC using the Application customization tool  new project as TPS65988DH, Standard, dual role port(DRP) prefers data host.

I connect the barrel and flash the configuration, I attach a phone on PORTB and it works! I then attach it on PORTA and VBUS gets continuously disconnected every second. Without ever properly negotiating the PD.

...

All Connectors are at default configurations as the board arrived.

Port A does sink properly, it is only sourcing that does not work.  PortB does both.

I attached the configuration.

Kind Regards,
Pavlos

  • Hello pavlos,

Thank you for your query. Due to the 4th of July holiday, please expect delayed responses.

  • Using my laptop as the secondary sink device. This issue happens on both Ports when I attach the sink device first and the Source device second. But using my phone it only happens when I attach the sink on portA and the source on port B afterwards.

It seems that the IC turns off each own supply(The path from VBUS to VSYS) and resets.

    I have set S2 switch6 to ON.

  • Hi,

Can you clarify the device you are using? If you are using TPS65988DJ you cannot use the TPS65988DH FW.

    Regards

  • Hi Tommy,

    I use TPS65988DJEVM which I believe has TPS65988DJ onboard.
Does that mean I had to get TPS65988DKEVM to test TPS65988DHRSHR?
How can I program the TPS65988DJ? Do I need a different application? In the application, I can only choose TPSXXXDK and TPSXXXDH.
Is there a hardware difference between the boards? If there is, can you share the Altium source files for TPS65988DKEVM?

    Kind Regards,

  • Hi

DH/DJ/DK are different ROM spins as DK is the latest ROM spin. If you want to test TPS65988DHRSHR you need to use TPS65988DHEVM. However, TPS65988DH is an older device and we recommend customer to move to TPS65988DK.

TPS65988DJ is not recommended unless you are following Intel TBT device as you need NDA to access the GUI tool for this device.

TPS65988DJEVM and TPS65988DKEVM have the same hardware.

  • Hi Tommy,

What is the process of getting the NDA signed?

    I Understand that:
"TPS65988DJ is for Thunderbolt 3 devices.
    TPS65988DK is for Thunderbolt/USB 4 devices.
The TPS65988DH would be the best option if you are designing a DisplayPort/USB system."

We have some products that already use TPS65988DH. Is TPS65988DH and TPS65988DK fully compatible in terms of footprint and register map? If not can you provide the register map for both? Assuming we do not need to use Thunderbolt/USB 4 devices will we be able to use the same firmware?

Assuming the TPS65988DJEVM and  TPS65988DKEVM, does that mean I could change the TPS65988DJ IC with a TPS65988DH or TPS65988DK and it should still work?

What about TPS65987DH and TPS65987DK? Do you suggest changing updating those designs too?

    Kind Regards,

  • Hi,

What is the process of getting the NDA signed?

I will forward this to our marketing team and they will handle this process.

Is TPS65988DH and TPS65988DK fully compatible in terms of footprint and register map?

Yes the register map and footprint are the same.

Assuming we do not need to use Thunderbolt/USB 4 devices will we be able to use the same firmware?

In terms of PD FW you will need to use DK specific FW

Assuming the TPS65988DJEVM and  TPS65988DKEVM, does that mean I could change the TPS65988DJ IC with a TPS65988DH or TPS65988DK and it should still work?

You should only swap the DJ IC with DK IC, and you will need to change the FW you load onto the device.

What about TPS65987DH and TPS65987DK? Do you suggest changing updating those designs too?

I will let our marketing team answer this question.

    Regards

  • Hi Tommy,

Thank you for the prompt response.

Will the marketing team reach me here or email?

If the register map is the same, why do we need different firmware between DH and DK?

I just struggle to understand how the same register map will lead to different firmware, and I am just trying to figure out the exact difference between the two ICs.

    Thank you for your patience,
    Pavlps

  • There is a different firmware internal to the device but it does not have an effect on the register mapping. We are suggesting that all customers that require DisplayPort video, and starting a new design, for them to use the TPS65987DDK and TPS65988DK. This is the latest device so interoperability will be best with this device as it follows the latest standards.
