TPS7A24: Minimum Input capacitance

Part Number: TPS7A24

Tool/software:

From the datasheet, I understand that Input Capacitor has to be 1uF typ as a good design practice. Please can you comment on the minimum input capacitance needed.

In my design with input to LDO as 6V, I am using a local bulk cap of 0.1uF/50V at TPS7A2433DBVR's input pin. In my application, I do not have fast load transient or line transients. I believe Cin=0.1uF is okay as input capacitance is not related to stability of LDO. Please can you comment.

  • Hi Karan,

As mentioned in Section 8.1.3 (Input and Output Capacitor Requirements) of the datasheet, an input capacitor is not required for stability. But it is recommended to have one to  counteract reactive input sources and improves transient response, input ripple, and PSRR.

The recommended values can be found in Section 6.3 (Recommended Operating Conditions) of the datasheet. Here too, you can see there's no min. input cap required. However, the nominal value for input 'capacitor' is 1uF. We assume 'capacitance' of the capacitor to derate to 50% of the nominal value. Thus, the nominal 'capacitance' for input is 0.5uF.

Let me know if you have any additional questions.

    Best Regards,

    Bobby
