BQ40Z50-R2: Help changing the firmware logic to make our pack compatible with previous system

Part Number: BQ40Z50-R2
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ40Z50

Tool/software:

Our packs are using bq20z655 which is not recommended for new design. When we used the BQ40z50r2 to replace the upgrade, we found that the two chips were incompatible due to system software judgment problems.

Because several safety certifications of our new battery with bq40z50r2 has been completed, changing the chip present means the time and money are all wasted . Could you please help change a register value? We want that when pack meets short circuit in discharge, the firmware logic sets the Charging Current register to 0 until recovery like bq20z655. Is there any access we can get this changed-firmware?Purchasing or company corporate communication?Hope your reply, thanks very much!

  • Hi Xiaojuan,
Charging Current should be set to zero under a protection trip event in the bq40z50.  Have you tested this?

  • The new pack can't work in system like before, and our team found that our original system software had a wrong judgment about charging status according to the pack changing current register. But we have no access to change all product's system because it has been used for tens of years and used in so many countries. Our team has locate the problem at the differences of the charging current register.Could you please help us to get the changed firmware? Thanks!

  • If we can run the changed-firmware,we will eventually prove our team's judgment in our imperfect system. We really want to have a try with your valuable assistance.

  • Hi Xiaojuan,
This will require a FW change. This is not an easy process. Please contact your local Field Applications Engineer (FAE) so that they can contact the Gauging Business Unit.

  • Okay, thanks,in fact we have already contacted the FAE around a month ago,but find no way yet.So wonder if there is another access~

  • Hi Xiaojuan,
Unfortunately, you will have to contact your FAE. This is the process for FW requests. This takes a lot of effort. This is not an easy process.

On the other hand, I did a quick test on bq40z50EVM with CUV protection. The gauge was reporting 1500 mA for Charging current before CUV. After CUV it reported 88 mA. 88mA for my testing means pre-charge current. Maybe setting pre-charge current to 0A will do the trick for your current design?

I know you are not testing CUV, but as I mentioned earlier, the gauge should change the requested charging current value under a protection event.
