TPS65224Q1EVM: Buck output capacitor selection

Part Number: TPS65224Q1EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS65224-Q1

Tool/software:

Hello, team.

We used the TPS65224-Q1 to supply power to the processor's various rails. We were using the TPS6522x Evaluation Module User's Guide as a design reference, and the only difference is that Buck 4 is utilized for 3V3 supply requirements. Is it possible to explain the procedure used to select the output capacitor for a given BUCK output, or may we assume it to be the same as the other BUCK outputs, such as 47uF, 22uF, 2.2uF, and 0.1uF?

  • Hi Venkatesh,

The device on the EVM is TPS6522430RAHRQ1. Bucks 1 and 2 are configured with high load step performance loop coefficients for 4.4 MHz. Bucks 3 and 4 are configured with normal loop coefficients for 4.4 MHz. Note that different OPNs may use different configurations. These performance use cases have different output capacitor requirements.

Minimum effective output capacitance requirements per phase are below:

Use case Minimum local capacitance Minimum total output capacitance
High load step performance 4.4 MHz 12 µF 35 µF
Normal load step performance 4.4 MHz 5 µF 12 µF

    BR,
